New Music Tuesday

New Mountain Goats!!  John Darnielle with a full sound on this song from the new album, including a brass instrument -- a horn that sounds like a bugle!  This is definitely a different take on the Mountain Goats we have grown to know and love with all our hearts and on his 14th -- yes, 14th -- album I'm more than a little excited to see where the full album takes him.  It's called Transcendental Youth and is out October 2nd on Merge.  The first track "Cry for Judas" is below.

Crystal Castles have put out "Plague" from (presumably) their forthcoming album, as yet untitled and un-release-dated (if that's not a word -- and it's not -- it should be).  We are used to pounding beats and ethereal atmospheres from Crystal Castles but I'm not sure I've ever felt so wholly immersed in the experience of their music as I am with this track, which reminds me of M83's last album, and I say that as a definite compliment.  Dream on below.

Bat for Lashes latest album is coming out in October and is titled The Haunted Man.  The cover is over there to the right and perhaps appeases the wandering eyes who may have stumbled on this blog for more prurient reasons than love for indie rock music but the song, well, it's just beautiful.  According to Soundcloud, "Laura" has been a fan favorite at recent performances at European festivals and is available for purchase at iTunes.   This is a really stunning song.

I mentioned Passion Pit's long-awaited sophomore effort Gossamer last week in this space but that was only based on a couple solid listens and the more I hear from the effort, the more I like it -- much more even than their strong 2009 debut.  "Take a Walk" has been floating around the Internets (tm Ted Stevens) for a while now and the band put out the second single below but they are just the tip of the iceberg for this really great album.  "Carried Away" is punchy and catchy and danceable, "Hideaway" is tortured and tremendous, and the closing two tracks are like a throwback to a different time and place in music that seems like it must have been a brilliant world but may not actually have ever existed.  I highly recommend you check it out.
