So I have a little news (a little late) about Spencer's next musical effort, the now long awaited collaboration with Finnish post-rockers Siinai. They have recorded an album together in Helsinki, with Spencer on vocals and the band backing him, and it will be released in North America by Jagjaguwar, Spencer's label. Here's a loosely translated interview with some members of the band:
How do you think the band will be developed by 2012? Risto: We just made a second album. We have recorded this summer, I've recorded in Helsinki and for this album going to have a vocalist, Spencer Krug with Wolf Parade, which is who will do all the vocals on the album.
But he lives in Montreal? Risto: Yeah, but flew to Finland to record the album, maybe we were about 5 weeks. So we recorded all together in Helsinki. This will be our next album. In fact right now we are doing the mix. The boys are doing Kaiku Studios in Berlin, which have in fact also the last album mixed Handsome Furs.
Do you plan to leave also a hallmark of Finland? Matti: The first record we've released in a Norwegian label called splendor. This second album will be the hallmark of Spenser, Jagjaguwar.
Do you plan to continue touring or are you going to wait out the new album? Risto: I think we'll do some bowling until the end of the year and by 2012 the idea is to turn and with the new album.
Will the new album will be released before summer? Probably, but this will be decided by the record company.
And here's a shot of Spencer from the Facebook page of Siinai (that's him smoking a cigarette in the back)
I've also recently unearthed this interview from October 2011 with Spencer Krug where he's rocking a heavy Canadian accent (and smoking, sadly) and talking a lot about Montreal, interspersed with a dimly lit recording of a live "Loose Heart = Loose Plan". I don't know that there's much to learn here but pretty much if Spencer Krug is getting interviewed, you'll find it on this blog.
And then there's this article about Camilla Wynne, the "Camilla" of Sunset Rubdown fame, who has branched out into a very different field now that Sunset Rubdown is over:
Wynne began her career as a pastry chef, working underneath the famed Patrice Demers at high-end Montreal restaurants like Les Chevres and Laloux. But in more recent months, she’s been focusing solely on her growing independent business, Preservation Society. Wynne sells a fascinating assortment of jams, chutneys and pickles, with an emphasis on seasonal and local ingredients. (She likes to handpick her own apples and pears at remote Quebec orchards).
And lastly, here's a little "Little Lord" from 2007, back in Sunset Rubdown-ier days for Spencer and Camilla (hey look, Spencer's rocking a guitar !) The ending of this song live still gets me every time. Camilla, put the preserves away and tour with Spencer again please :)
No I'm not that kind of whore but I am a little lord...
I wish you the best, you snake
You are self-professed, you snake
My heart's in my chest, you snake
You can have the rest, you snake!!!!
