The Decemberists latest EP of outtakes from The King is Dead is titled Long Live the King, but unfortunately it will serve as the last new release from the band as they previously announced an extended hiatus (supposedly years) as the band's members move onto other creative efforts. They join Broken Social Scene and Wolf Parade as victims in 2011's indie rock early retirement game, a frightening prospect that is looking more and more like a trend. I don't really have a theory why so many "big" indie rock bands are going on extended hiatuses but it can't at all be considered a good thing. Even if The King is Dead was, in my opinion, the Decemberists' weakest album to date. The EP released in November doesn't really have much to offer in my opinion, so instead I'm choosing to remember a string of brilliant albums that started with 2002's stunning Castaways and Cutouts and included Picaresque, The Crane Wife, and Her Majesty, the Decemberists. As a band, Colin Meloy and the boys have always been experimental, inventive, oblique, lyrical, and truly wonderful, even in their moments that fell flatter (the much disliked The Hazards of Love, for instance). I can't really put into words how much this wonderful music will be missed.
