Someone new on the Wolf Parade forums asked for Spencer's contact info, which led to a thread of people questioning his motives, because he didn't seem to know enough about Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown to be asking to get in touch with our savior Spencer -- he didn't know who Camilla was, for crying out loud! -- but then us indie hipsters (yes, I said "us") came to realize that the original poster was just a teenager, trying to send Spencer a 500-word essay he wrote titled "Why Spencer Krug is Awesome." And that's pretty awesome. Jagjaguwar received and published the kid's essay last week.
When I was fourteen, I was into shit bands like Heart and Def Leppard and god, I don't know what other crap... I was still two years or so from discovering U2, and four years from fully discovering The Cure and The Replacements and New Order and The Smiths and abandoning completely all the music I used to follow as a kid. If I were 14 now, I would like to think I'd be a Spencer Krug fan, especially compared to the wretched crap on the radio today, but probably not. I can only say I'm a fan of Spencer's now. And he is awesome. As is 14-year-old "Joe S." from Minnesota:
He’s not afraid to play crazy music. He sings about crazy stuff, in a crazy voice, in a crazy way using crazy lyrics. Even the band names are crazy. Sunset Rubdown and Wolf Parade are pretty awesome band names though. Let’s talk song titles: Anna Anna Anna Oh, and Apollo and the Buffalo, Up on your Leopard Upon the End of Your Feral Days, and Suns [sic] and Daughters of Angry [sic] Ghosts. Those are pretty crazy, yet, awesome. Where do you even come up with titles like that? I doubt I could write those. Is he crazy? Well maybe… but that doesn’t mean he’s not awesome. You could even argue that being crazy is the reason that he’s so awesome. Is that too crazy to believe?
Thanks,
This blog is awesome.
