Built to Spill are back and releasing their 7th full-length, There is No Enemy, on October 6th, their first new album since 2006's You in Reverse. Since they are on and evil major label Warner Bros. (and probably making no money from their involvement -- sorry, Doug, come back to indie labels!), I won't be able to post any new tracks from the album here, but you can stream the first song below:
I heard the song "My Body's a Zombie for You" on Sirius (either XMU26 or CBCRadio3, since those are the only two music stations I listen to) some time ago, and I was fascinated/entranced by the sing-along chorus. I had been planning in the weeks since to find out who sang the song and to get a copy of the mp3. But first I had to remember what the song was called. Luckily the "zombie" part stuck in my brain and a quick search on Hype Machine led me to Brooklyn Vegan's write up on Dead Man's Bones, the band that produced said song. And while I still kind of love the song, I'm shocked to say that the band actually consists of actors Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, and was started as background music for a stage play about zombies, ghosts, and werewolves. Like, what? Is Brooklyn Vegan fucking with me? Apparently not. The self-titled debut is out on October 6th. Ryan Gosling? Half Nelson was a great fucking movie, but seriously?
Los Campesinos! released two albums last year, their debut and follow-up, in quite an ambitious display for an artist. And now they're back already with a new song, titled (in a Modest Mouse sort of a way), "The Sea is a Good Place to Think About the Future." I don't know if this is on a forthcoming album or a one-off, but it's a pretty great track for the consistently appealing band.
The Rural Alberta Advantage stepped into the Daytrotter studios and recorded four songs -- acoustic versions of "The Air" and "In the Summertime" and two new songs, "Barnesyard" and "Two Lovers." They've also got a video of another new song, this one untitled, available at Threadless TV, and they'll take suggestions on the thread for a name for the song. And they are about to go on tour -- again, seems like they've been touring nonstop since crashing the indie rock party with the wonderful Hometowns last November. I'll be at the October 7th show at the Bowery Ballroom, so if you're there too, say hi! Here are the dates of their tour.

Lou Barlow, fresh from his work on the re-united Dinosaur Jr. album and tour, is about to go on tour on his own to support his latest solo effort, Goodnight Unknown, which is due on October 6th on Merge. As part of the run-up to his new release, he's putting out a video a week on "Lootube" on the Merge Records website. Check out the videos, and check out the first song leaked from the album, which is quite good (and I dare say, better than the Dinosaur Jr. effort -- but obviously not better than Lou's 1990s work with Sebadoh -- when are they re-uniting?!).
Another Merge act, The Clientele, are releasing an album on October 6th as well, titled Bonfires on the Heath. According to the website: Bonfires on the Heath is a return to the Clientele's roots; the dreamlike suburban landscapes first encountered in the early singles, their trippy sense of menace stronger now. Back in London, they've drawn on older traditions of English folk, which exist here side by side with the band's more familiar bossa and pop elements. Mel Draisey's contributions on piano and violin add beautifully to MacLean's timeless, eerie songs. Instantly identifiable, the Clientele sound like no one else, although they are cited as an influence by bands as diverse as Spoon and the Fleet Foxes.
No Age has released their first song off a forthcoming EP Losing Feeling, which is also scheduled to come out on October 6th. Pre-order the album now and get the mp3s, for $8.
