I'm going on an end of summer blogging holiday for the next week or so, coinciding with my annual trip to Vermont and my annual running out of energy to keep posting every weekday. So hopefully I'll be back on Labor Day with some new posts, some new music, and the Phillies in first place. Don't hold your breath. Until then, I leave you with a bunch of songs. Most are new, some are a little older, and the one after the jump I posted a couple weeks ago, but I'm posting again because I just love this new Walkmen album.
New tracks:
- Said the Whale is from Vancouver. That's about all I know of them. This song's been playing regularly on CBC Radio 3 but I couldn't find it anywhere, so I got it from iTunes. It's a great track.
- The National debuted a new live song in Denmark last week. I don't know what it's called and the recording isn't that great, but the blog I got it from is calling it "A Thousand Black Cities". Enjoy.
- This Damien Jurado track is being given away for free on Emusic. I kind of, sort of got into Jurado some years ago but I don't have any tracks of his in my iTunes collection, so I must not have liked it too much. Regardless, this is a pretty great song.
Peter Bjorn & John's first release from their anticipated new album is... instrumental? And definitely different from the sound they made on their last album. Check it out.- New Los Campesinos!, but curiously not listed in the track listing for their upcoming October album. Their last album is already all over my top 10 albums of the year to date. Can they make it two?
Slightly Older tracks:
- Download Animal Collective - "Kids on Holiday".mp3
- Download Plants and Animals - "Bye Bye Bye".mp3
- #1 song of the year to date
- Download The Notwist - "Gone Gone Gone".mp3
- Download Lykke Li - "I'm Good, I'm Gone".mp3
- Download Conor Oberst - "NYC - Gone, Gone".mp3
- Download The Walkmen - "Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone".mp3
- Download Grandaddy - "Summer...It's Gone".mp3
- Download Belle & Sebastien - "I Know Where the Summer Goes".mp3
- Download Dirty Three - "Some Summers, They Drop Like Flys".mp3
- Download Okkervil River - "So Come Back, I'm Waiting".mp3
This song starts kind of slow, but when Hamilton Leithauser gets to the "a trumpet and a trombone" part, wow... it gets me every time. This and "In the New Year" are the two best Walkmen tracks since "The Rat," which came out 4 years ago. It's been a long wait, but I think it's worth it.
"I Lost You"
Drive on, drive on
The highway bright and long
The river's overflowing
The house is burning down
Drive on, drive on
The engines on the lawn
We kiss goodbye and drink up
Some hours before the dawn
We kiss goodbye and drink up
I'll miss you when you're gone
So throw me a line
Throw me a line
My heart's underneath
Aside on our feet
The windows are shaking
And so are my bones
The world's going round
Throw me a rope
A trumpet and a trombone
Still echoing in the hall
And bells ringing out at dawn
So hang on to me
Hang on to me
The world's going round
And time's coming up
The headlights are swinging all over the lawn
So throw me a rope
Throw me a rope
I knew you when i was young
The loveliest girl in town
I wish you were still around
I waited a long time
All for you
I waited a long time
I lost you
I was sleeping in the backseat
When I got home
I was finally reminded
I lost you
Say it ain't so, Bill! What will we do without VS???!!!

You aren't leaving us with this. At least put up a picture of those Amazing Race lesbians or something.

Have a nice break Bill.
And I agree with you on The Walkmen. Love the new album.

Amazing Race lesbians, great idea LegFuJonson! Or how about a pic of the Olympic beach volleyball final? Girls in tiny bikinis playing volleyball IN THE RAIN! Outstanding.

I watched the first set(?) last night. Believe me, there was nothing to look at. Misty May has a face like a frying pan and Kerri Walsh looked like a stork. They really shouldn't have been wearing bikinis. Kind of frightening. Unless of course you were referring to the Chinese team.

Our team will be most victorious over bad Americans.

Jokes aside...
Seriously. How about a picture of the Raiderettes? They won't be tied for first place for long.

So no naked or semi-naked pics? Poor showing VS.

Good choice. Go get 'em.

I hope you are not a vegan. Do you actually read the Daily Kos? It leans a little left don't ya think. I heard about it on Bill Oreilly and was not amazed to see it on your blog. Palin is hot. Love her glasses. That is about it though.
