Sirius is playing a lot of Holy Fuck lately, due to the release of the remixed single version of the absolutely brilliant track off their latest album LP, titled "Lovely Allen." I've heard the song on both Left of Center (26) and CBC Radio 3 (94), which makes me very happy, since I love the song. But it actually makes me even happier to hear the glee in the DJs' voices to get to use the title of the band's name in the introduction. Because, seriously, why the fuck not? Now, I've certainly been criticized in the past for blogging that word a bit too much, and in fact, in my class workshops on my novel, a few prudish fellow students observed that one of my characters in particular uses the F word quite a bit (as the professor noted, that was the point - thanks for noticing). But anyway, I certainly don't mind using the phrase in my everyday language, on my blog, in my novel, or pretty much anywhere I don't think people will mind. I wouldn't use it in front of my niece and nephews, or in front of my mother, or in front of my bosses, but everyone's language adapts to certain situations anyway. I'm offended that anyone would get offended by a simple word, though, and the fact that such words are censored gives them all their power in the first place. Do you think the Sirius DJs would give a shit if they could normally say "Holy Fuck" over the air without anyone noticing? And would that make a difference to anything in the world? I don't think so. And believe me, I don't mind. As long as someone out there gets a little bit offended by something in this post, it'll make me a little bit happy. Why the hell wouldn't it?
