I'm cheating a little bit with this "song."  There are no actual "songs" on the 2nd full-length album by Canadian collective GYBE.  There are officially four "movements" (as in orchestral movements) on the proper double CD release, "Storm" and "Static" forming CD-1, "Sleep" and "Antennas to Heaven" on CD-2.  These tracks are filled with beautiful music, spoken word collections, and field recordings.  This song, my 6th favorite song of all-time, is the opener to the entire album, the first 6:15 of "Storm", and on the band's website they broke out the "parts" of each movement, this one given the same title as the album, although in Pitchfork's review, they get some French words mixed in.

The waltz-like grace of the opening part of "Storm" (titled "Levez Vos Skinny Fists Comme Antennas to Heaven") is dominated by rising cello and violin which evolve, with the addition of guitars and martial drum taps, into a loud triumphal procession. Blaring trumpets seem to announce the advent of some head of state, and the whole affair proceeds with military discipline and measured effect.

So I'm calling it a song, and putting it on the list, because to be honest, while the rest of the album is stunning and breathtaking, all the breaks and pauses and spoken words are too distracting for repeated listens, especially compared to the brilliance of the opening track, the best piece of instrumental post-rock ever put onto record, in my opinion.  The band is filled with a bunch of anarchists who hate corporations (and corporate media), but when you listen to the wonder of their music, particularly in this song, you can't help but be swept away by the power of their vision.  I had never heard anything before like this in rock music - it's almost a blend of classical and rock, or the perfection of a combination of the two, the truly defining piece of post-rock history, or as Pitchfork puts it...

That said, the Canadian nontet's Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven is a massive, achingly beautiful work, alternately elegiac and ferocious.

It's my 6th favorite "song" of all time.  There are no lyrics.
