The Smiths, Pavement, and Modest Mouse each have three songs represented in my top 17 of all-time listing, or over half of the remaining songs. Which is probably a good reason why they are my favorite three bands of all-time, I guess. This offering from the Mouse was once one of their hardest to find songs, appearing only on this limited issue EP for the now-defunct Up Records. The record, I believe, is out of print now, and I'm not sure the song has ever appeared on another collection, despite its brilliance. Or perhaps that's the cause of its brilliance in my eyes. In either case, the file sharing age has probably made this available to anyone who wants it, including those visiting my site today. And that's certainly a good thing.
This collection was one of the first music recordings for the band, produced when Isaac Brock was only a young lad of 22. And his hopes and dreams of musical wonder come through on this track, which would end up being one of the greatest in his career, a long, anthemic, and truly beautiful piece of music that stays with you long after the song is finished (and not just because there's several minutes of silence before the track actually ends). So enjoy. And program your iTunes to shut the song off once Isaac's done his thing so you don't have to listen to the silence every time.
