The first studio release from the Modesto, CA, group after several self-released EPs and collections of songs, featured this blast of pure pop brilliance, one of the most enjoyable "pop" songs I've ever heard. After the opening spoken/computerized voice saying "Sum - mer here kids", the music just explodes in a cacophony of instrumental brilliance, followed by a slow-downed midtempo singing by the extraordinary Jason Lytle, which eventually burst into the celebratory chorus of "summer here kiiiiiiids!" It just doesn't get any catchier than that. All the while the lyrics flood an undercurrent of disaffection through the speakers. And we're all the worse for the fact that Grandaddy never made it "big", like fellow west coast indie rockers Modest Mouse and Death Cab, and now they are in the ashes of rock history, having broken up almost two years ago. But we still have their music.

After she lets you glide around
finally hit the ground like a paper plane
take a trip join me in the sun
but not really though, 'cause I aint having fun
'Cause summer here kids
summer here totally lies

I'd have a good time
summer here kids
all of them awful lies

Do as I didn't do because
I’m a picture of I'mdumbivinity
stay alone put a record on

keep yourself at home
'Cause summer here kids
