From the review,
"Neutral Milk Hotel's debut, On Avery Island, is an inscrutable concept album, a chronicle of an insular world told in a remarkably universal language. A fuzzy masterpiece of experimental lo-fi recording, the album wraps its ragged pop songs in ribbons of loops, marching-band squawks, and Casio noodling."
Jeff Mangum released his first full-length under the name Neutral Milk Hotel with this album, recorded mostly in Denver, with the assistance of Robert Schneider (The Apples in Stereo), Rick Benjamin, and Lisa Janssen. A move to Athens, GA, followed, where Mangum and Schneider assisted Will Hart in the creation of the Elephant 6 recording label, full of experimental and original indie sounds (Apples, Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, Of Montreal). There, Mangum teamed up with Julian Koster, Scott Spillane, and Jeremy Barnes to form a full-fledged band, and back in Denver, they recorded one of the greatest works of art in the history of music in 1998. And then in December of 1998, Mangum played what has come to be his final show as part of the band, followed by an extended hiatus (including an alleged breakdown) that he's never returned from. But over the course of three years and just two albums, Mangum left a breathtaking array of wonderful music, including this track off On Avery Island, the combination of two different songs - the quirky and meandering "Gardenhead" and the rip-roaring "Leave Me Alone."
Vague Space #32 Song of All Time
There are beads that wrap
Around your knees that crackle into the dark
Like a walk in the park, like a hole in your head
Like the feeling you get when you realize you're dead
This time, we ride roller coasters into the ocean
We feel no emotion as we spiral down to the world
And I guess it's worth your time
Because there's some lives you live
And some you leave behind
It gets hard to explain
The gardenhead knows my name
Leave me alone, for you know this isn't the first time
In fact this is twice in a row
That the angels have slipped through our landslide
And filled up our garden with snow
And I don't wish to taste of your insides
Or to call out your name through my phone
For the glory boys at your bedside will love you
As long as you're something to own
Follow me through
A city of frost covered angels
I swear I have nothing to prove
I just want to dance in your tangles
To give me some reason to move
But to take on the world at all angles
Requires a strength I can't use
So I'll meet you up high in your anger
Of all that is hoping and waiting for you
Great choice. This is an amazing song.

Joa, I feel like a grandfather, which I am, but not yours (drat it!), who can be btsnuirg with pride at what his little girl is doing now. This poem just SWINGS, as we would say when I was your age, from drain to remains to same to away , which make it almost a four-line rhyming poem in the old style , and yet it's wholly new. Kay Ryan could be glad to write it, even though it's not in her style at all (or only a little more in hers than anyone else's). It's really yours, and you are on your way.Swing away!John
