Another week, another big day of album releases. You have to love the fall for that. Let's get right into it.
- The band actually leaked the album themselves months ago - to legitimate download services and I think Insound has had it available for a while as well, but the official release date is today. It's a wonderful album, filled with the kind of orchestral theatrics we have grown accustomed to from the band - a little over the top at times, but overall a pleasant joy, including this blast of inspired pop goodness...
- Sonic Youth's legendary frontman has released his first solo effort in a decade, this inspired blast from the past, heavy on guitars, light on the hooks, but just a great album throughout. Words cannot do it justice. Take a listen to this incredible track as a sample and then go buy the album.
- Speaking of leaks, this album popped up on Emusic last week, allowing for legitimate downloading a few weeks before the October 9th release date. It sounds like a typical Beirut album, but with a fuller and more mature sound that is certainly different than anything else you'll find in indie rock today. In a good way. Pre-order by clicking on the link above.
I blogged about them last week, but I'm absolutely loving the new albums by Rogue Wave and Kevin Drew. Here's the link to more songs from them, and below are two more tracks. Go buy their albums Asleep at Heaven's Gate and Spirit If...
Akron/Family - the backing band for Angels of Light - have released a well-received new album Love is Simple, available at Amazon with a bonus DVD of the band. Here's one of the better tracks on the release.
And last but not least, Swedish singer/ songwriter Jose Gonzalez has released his latest album In Our Nature today. Here's one of the great, slow tracks.

I absolutely love the Kevin Drew album. Definitely a favourite of this year. I just picked up the new Iron & Wine which is very good too. I need to get the new Stars and Beirut. It really is hard to keep up with all this new music.

I'm a little down on the Iron & Wine album, but I don't know that I've ever been a big fan of his music, outside of his collaboration with Calexico. On the other hand, I agree that the Kevin Drew album is excellent. Just loaded with catchy hooks throughout.

Let me try this again. J's album is good. Really good. It's a love album about all the agnst and punishment we enurde. He has a broken voice like Neil's that evokes nuanced feelings otherwise not conveyed by lyrics or instruments. Unlike Neil, he's is a guitar player. He can pick a rythm and lead simultaneously that draws you to the mirror. Where you stand in silence wondering what you're looking at. This album has polish and depth. It carries an ebb and flow. It tells a story of love lost, fought, found and held. I listen to a lot of crap waiting for brilliance. This album percolates with sparkle and grain. I think he's onto something both personal and universal. This album reaches across the gap between the reclusive artist J's always been, to the audience he never cared to find.
