Do Make Say Think
You, You're a History in Rust
Rating: 8.3 (out of 10)
A stunning album of truly magical beauty from a band that I never gave much thought to as anything more than simply a quality outfit of postrock musicians. I didn't expect them to reach the heights they've hit on this release, but it is wonderful. From opening track "Bound to be that Way," a majestic infusion of rock into beautiful orchestration, to the album's magnificent closer, "In Mind," there is not a dull or forgettable moment in the entire collection.
Eight tracks total. "A With Living" features Alex Lukashevsky on vocals, which fade about halfway through the 9 minute song, meandering to a close that is abruptly interrupted with the emphatic explosion of "The Universe!", certainly the hardest rocking track I've ever heard them create. It is a five-minute post-rock anthem of absolute joy, featuring echoing guitars crashing over emphatic drums, with a stately elegance that elevates and expands the piece. "A Tender History in Rust" follows, a sprawling masterpiece of moody ambient sounds, playfully opening and then bending away, truly epic. By the time this Canadian five piece comes to a close by singing the final parts of "In Mind," I was rendered speechless. Go buy this album.
- When you die, you'll have to leave them behind. You should keep that in mind.
