Modest Mouse is back. New album coming this fall, tentatively titled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, and it comes with the fascinating news -- and fascinating is really the only way to describe it - that they've got a new guitarist on board both for the new album and for a subsequent tour, and it is none other than Johnny Marr. Yes, that Johnny Marr. It will be the Mouse's 7th full-length studio release, coming on the heels of the shocking success of 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News. Will the addition of Marr help this band that longtime fans never thought would actually be heard on mainstream radio and television achieve further success? No one knows, and at this point there are no leaks of new tracks recorded for the album. But when a key member of this blogger's favorite band of all-time joins his 2nd favorite band still recording music, I'd say that my excitement level can hardly be topped.
Here is a "new" track that made its way onto the Internet recently - it's an unreleased rare song from early in their career, along with a couple of live versions off their Baron von Bullshit Rides Again compilation that was given away to the early purchasers of Good News (like me!). Enjoy.

Just an update for those concerned -- thanks for your prayers, my friend Mike is doing very well after surgery. The doctors pretty much think it's a miracle that he's not paralyzed, but he isn't. He has full movement in all his limbs and was actually standing and using the walker around his hospital room today. The only pain he says he's feeling is from an incision in his side where they took a bone out of his hip and replaced it in his neck. Yeah, it's pretty sick. He's got a big neck brace on and will be in the hospital for weeks (and rehab for months after that), but the prognosis is for a full recovery. It's a very good day. And oh yeah, I got accepted into graduate school. More on that and its effect on this blog in a future post. I'm going to bed now. My neck is still killing me.
It's like deja vu all over again.
