I haven't blogged about this show in a while, but it is still on my weekly viewing schedule. Yes I know I say I don't have enough time to watch recommended quality programs like Rescue Me or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (although I have caught the last couple episodes of it and it's quite funny), while I continue to watch another Real World/Road Rules Challenge retread, but let's not concentrate on the negative and get right into the show. Fresh Meat - as they've decided to call this season - is down to four teams, as follows:
- Derrick and Diem
- Tina and Kenny
- Darrell and Aviv
- Wes and Casey
And the fact that I knew those without having to look them up or check on the spelling is disturbing enough. Let's just try to move on.
Wes and Casey have been the story of the season, getting banished to the Inferno Gauntlet Exile challenge almost every week in the early going, but somehow surviving 5 of the Exiles to come back every single week. Wes is the last surviving member of the Austin cast and has been since Week 4, as his other three castmates were unceremoniously dumped in the early going by the veteran teams fearing an alliance between the new cast members. And he and Casey - well, mostly Casey - are horrible in the weekly challenges, not registering much competition at all. But in the Exile, where teamwork is less important and Wes can literally carry all the weight for his pathetic and useless partner, they continue to win. It also hasn't hurt that they seem to have packed lighter than any other team (and therefore don't have to carry as heavy bags during the Exile) and that they've had so much experience in the challenge, but it is impressive nonetheless. I really couldn't stand Wes early on (and didn't think much of him in the Austin episodes that I watched), but the fact that he continues to drag his partner across the finish line to victory, and that he's still alive after all those Exiles, is quite a feat. So I think I'm kind of rooting for him. At least moreso than Derrick.
I never liked Derrick - in any of these challenges, and while he's gotten less intense, and therefore less annoying, as he's gotten older, his betrayal of his friends Theo and Darrell in the previous week's episode was pretty appalling. Yes, he felt bad about it, and yes, he realized he made a mistake when Darrell got voted in by the other teams after he and Diem sent Theo in, but it was too little, too late. And with Darrell and Aviv still around, it could bite him in the ass. And I won't even get into how strange it is for Diem, who's like 10 years younger than him and way hot, to be sexually interested in him, so let's just move on again.
The strangest turn of events on the show is how of the four remaining teams, only Darrell and Aviv were regarded as one of the strong teams in the competition. Everyone else is gone. Theo and Chanda got kicked off this week, losing a shocking Exile to Tina and Kenny, whose experience with the event along with Tina's self-professed puzzle expertise helped them to victory, knocking out a much more dominant team. Shane and Linette were knocked off a week ago. And Coral and Evan both suffered injuries that forced them out of the competition (against their protestations), after having dominated the early challenges. And so really only Darrell and Aviv are left. Kenny and Tina and Wes and Casey have arguably been the two weakest teams in the challenges (along with Katie and Eric) but their skills at the Exile (having survived a combined 7 times), along with Derrick and Diem's decision to go after the strong teams, has kept them alive at this point. And now it's anyone's game.
There's one last challenge next week that will reduce the teams to three, all of which will win money in the final competition. But there is a huge discrepancy between first ($250k) and second ($30k), so they will be battling all the way to the finish. Darrell and Aviv are certainly the favorites, but they need to win this week's challenge or else they will definitely be sent into Exile by the stronger teams. Derrick and Diem are probably next in line, but with the way Wes has performed in the Exiles, you can't count his team out (even though he's dragging a complete dead weight), and Tina is still one of the stronger girls in the competition, despite her advancing age (yes, I'm aware I'm probably at least 5 years older than her, but it seems like she's been around forever). So it should be very interesting. And continue to be entertaining. This was a very well-cast show, with enough of the good veterans (Tina, Coral, Theo, Darrell, Shane), a sprinkling of the villainous ones (Tonya, Katie, Wes), along with the Austin cast angle, and a host of newcomers who haven't made that much of an impression, but were for the most part amusing, especially the impressive Evan, the funny Kenny, and the gorgeous Diem. Even Casey, who's been so worthless as a competitor, has been riveting to watch, and really, that's all I could ask for. I don't know who I'm rooting for - probably Tina and Kenny, but I'll be happy with anyone winning. Except Derrick. If he gets all that money and gets Diem while still being a dick, I'll be pretty pissed. Of course, she's like dying from some disease or something, so it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if Derrick won. Only if he gives her a bigger share of the pie though.
