The Phillies traded their best player over the past decade and still one of the best outfielders in the National League despite a dropoff in power over the past year (3rd in the league in OBP), along with their #3 starting pitcher to the hated, hated, despised, evil motherfucking New York Yankees for... prized pitching prospect Phillip Hughes? No. Formerly prized 3rd base prospect Eric Duncan? No. Young major league stars like Robinson Cano or Chien-Ming Wang? Not so much. Melky Cabrera? Not even him. Three middling prospects and the Yankees first round pick in 2005 (a pick given to them by the Phillies when we signed Jon Lieber that year, a lot of good that did), a young shortstop who is hitting .230 in Single A. Are you fucking kidding me? Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle unceremoniously dumped in one of the worst deals I can ever remember, just because the Yankees were willing to take on Abreu's salary. The Phillies are easily the worst run franchise in a city full of horribly run franchises that are in their third decade without a championship. It's a complete disgrace. I am completely disgusted and I don't know if I can even be a Phillies fan anymore. Yes, I've been to 7 games this season but that was 90% for the cheesesteaks, 8% for McFadden's, and the last 2% for the crappy ass sucking team that Pat Gillick and the owners wasted our hard-earned money on. And oh yeah, we released Ryan Franklin today as well, after his signing turned out to be the complete bust 100% of people not named Pat Gillick assumed it would be.
Oh and I read this on Rotoworld... I haven't confirmed whether it's true but I'm pretty confident it is...
In taking Abreu's contract, the Yankees would be employing about $100
million more in talent than any other team in baseball. If they can win
under those circumstances, well, Joe Torre really must be a genius.
What a fucking disgrace.
a) There is too much profanity in this post.
b) Yes, all Philly teams suck. Eagles 5-11 this year.
c) Let's Go Yankees!
d) Have the Rangers won a game this week yet?

there is no other way to say put it than to say baseball's a flat out joke. in no other sport can you purchase players as if they were stocks which is exactly what the Yankees did. how Bud Selig can allow such a transaction is beyond belief.

It's all about money. The Yankees get high ratings because so many people in the world want to want them lose. So Selig lets them do anything they want. Which makes people angrier and watch them more, hoping that Jeter gets plunked in the face. It's a vicious never-ending cycle.

The joke is that people try to judge this trade today, when it can't be judged until you see what the Phillies do with the money (or until the minor leaguers advance). If they take the money that would have gone to Abreu and Lidle and give it to Zito and some OF, then they replaced their talent and got the minor leaguers on top. The Phillies are going nowhere. This deal can help them in the future.
Now if they do nothing with the cash savings, there's the disgrace.
The Marlins traded Matt Clement and Antonio Alfonseca to the Cubs for minor leaguers that no one heard of either a few years back. One of them turned out to be Dontrelle Willis, but by then no one remembers.
