The O.C. is unwatchable. It's been in the midst of a steady spiral since early in Season 2, and here we are in the midst of a truly horrific Season 3 that has finally lost me forever. The entire Johnny plotline that resulted in his "tragic" (as in tragically boring) death was the end for me. Sort of. I've been behind at least 2 episodes on TiVo but I watched this week's episode after the end of the Duke game. And I realized finally, that there is nothing redeeming about this show anymore. I could really care less about any of the characters. The actors are blatantly going through the motions (Adam Brody most egregiously). And the writers' attempts to bring some new energy - or anything - to the series by introducing multiple storylines a week involving tertiary characters just is doing nothing for me. We end up with a new character (like last night's Jess) who just ends up acting like Marissa, so we see Ryan reacting the same boring way in the same boring manner. It's just unbearable.
But the thing that has taken me over the edge, the thing that has made me unwilling to ever turn on Fox on a Thursday night again (or any other night for that matter, now that Arrested Development is gone), was that they used an incredible song as the background music for the episode - a definite factor in their favor through the years - but this time, instead of the brilliant original version of Bright Eyes' "Lover I Don't Have to Love", they substituted some weak, ethereal version featuring some horrible chick singing the lines, devoid of Conor's irony. The cover was by Bettie Serveert, which I think is a Norweigan or Danish band or something and I'm sure they're great and all, but they're no fucking Bright Eyes. The O.C. may have asked Conor to use the original and he turned them down (he's not as big into whoring his music as Death Cab is), but even if that is so, they should have just moved on to a different song. Because that was just a disgrace. Not as disgraceful as Adam Brody's performance this season, but really bad. Read on to download the original version of the song. And please help me not to waste my time with this show anymore.
I want a lover I don't have to love.
I want a girl who's too sad to give a fuck.
Where is the kid with the chemicals?
I thought he said to meet him here, but I'm not sure.
I got the money if you've got the time.
You said it feels good, I said I'll give it a try.
Then my mind went dark.
We both forgot where your car was parked.
Let's just take the train.
I'll meet up with the band in the morning.
Bad actors with bad habits.
Some sad singers, they just play tragic.
And the phone's ringing and the van's leaving.
Let's just keep touching, let's just keep singing...
Download Bright Eyes - "Lover I Don't Have to Love".mp3
This track is of course from the band's seminal 2002 album, Lifted or the Story is in the Soil, Keep your Ear to the Ground, which happens to be my #4 favorite album of all time. And the sad part is, it was pretty appropriate to the plot of the episode, as Marissa sacks up with some asshole just to get back at Ryan for dumping her. So I respect the effort. Even if it was executed so poorly.

His name's not really Ryan! That's the character on the show. Which sucks now. It was never "the best show on tv", but it was very entertaining. Now it's horrible. Ask any fan.
But thanks for reading!

Bright Eyes is a great band, MidnightWalker. I've never heard the O.C. version, but I'm sure the Bright Eyes one is better. I love that band. =]
