Aaron Gleeman had a neat idea (well I thought it was neat) to put his iPod on shuffle and see what were the first 40 songs that shuffled to were and record them. He challenged other bloggers to do the same, so here are my results. (And already we may have a challenge to my blog's "low point in history", which was achieved earlier today when I talked extensively about "Blossom").
1. "16 Military Wives" The Decemberists (interesting - I just bought the album Picaresque yesterday - I always thought iPod picks newer tunes more frequently - is this proof?)
2. "Crowning of a Heart" ...And You Will Know us by the Trail of Dead
3. "They Always Come" Dinosaur Jr.
4. "8" Sunny Day Real Estate
5. "Easy/Lucky/Free" Bright Eyes
6. "Electioneering" Radiohead
7. "Driveway to Driveway" Superchunk
8. "I'll be in the Air" The Microphones
9. "Every Little Counts" New Order
10. "I Remember" Low
Songs 2 to 4 are from bands I don't really listen to much anymore, while #7 is one of my all-time favorite songs. Not a bad mix of songs overall here.
11. "Helps Both Ways" Mogwai
12. "The Angels of Sleep" Portastatic
13. "Summer" Modest Mouse
14. "the Ghost of What should have Been" Owen
15. "Blue" Conor Oberst
16. "The Breadman" Superchunk
17. "Venus and Serena" Super Furry Animals
18. "How's my Drinking?" Guided by Voices
19. "Fight this Generation" Pavement
20. "Someone is Waiting" Neutral Milk Hotel
A much better collection of artists, including 3 of my top 5 favorites (Modest Mouse, Pavement, Superchunk), but not exactly their best songs. Really not a great song in the bunch at all - probably "How's My Drinking" or "Helps Both Ways" are the best. The rest I would have skipped over. The Super Furry Animals song was downloaded recently as well.
21. "Portions of Foxes" Rilo Kiley
22. "Your Guide at the Winston Churchill Memorial" Guided by Voices
23. "Petty Thievery" Seam
24. "In a Stage Whisper" Superchunk
25. "Sugar" Superdrag
26. "Sprawl" Ben Lee
27. "Waitin' for a Superman" The Flaming Lips
28. "Score from Augusta" Beulah
29. "Bukowski" Modest Mouse
30. "Huffman Prairie Flying Field" Guided by Voices
Another unimpressive collection of songs, I think. This is probably why I do more playlists than completely random shuffling on my iPod. The two GbV songs are from their latest album, which I didn't much care for, so I don't really know them. Best song of the bunch - "Bukowski" and "In a Stage Whisper". Both are worse than the best of the previous batch of 20.
31. "Poison 1080" Noise Addict
32. "Bloodflowers" The Cure
33. "Backwoods Nation" Pedro the Lion
34. "Fifth Fret" The Connells
35. "Street Carp" Deftones
36. "'Yeah' is what we Had" Grandaddy
37. "Late Century Dream" Superchunk
38. "Obstacle 1" Interpol
39. "Information Travels Faster" Death Cab for Cutie
40. "Outta Me, Onto You" Ani DiFranco
A couple of clunkers here (latter album Cure - ew...) but some really good songs finally. "Late Century Dream" is another Superchunk masterstroke (they were well represented in this shuffle) and "Obstacle 1" was one of my favorite songs from 2002 (and still is actually).
I actually liked this idea for a blog post. This is an especially good idea for those days when I can't come up with anything to write. Of course, I doubt anyone reading this will enjoy it, especially since no one I know likes my music. Oh well. Maybe Gleeman will link to this like he said he would.
Nice, do you listen to WOXY? So far I think Aaron & I have the most opposite music tastes.
Also how is that Rilo Kiley album? Is it the one with "it's a hit" on it?

I've heard WOXY but I don't listen to it much. I've got SIRIUS satellite now, so I listen to that mostly (the Left of Center station) when I'm not listening to the iPod.
As for Rilo Kiley, I downloaded a few of their songs from Kazaa and I think they were on a Saddle Creek Records collection I own, but I don't really know them that well. I don't own any albums of theirs.

Don't have satellite. I catch WOXY on the internet at work. Almost listen to it exclusively these days.
As for RK, I went to Tower & they had her new album on one of the listening stations. I just couldn't put down any of the 5 other CDs I had to buy it. I try to limit the # of CDs I buy or else I'll have hell to pay come credit card bill day.

Well, I linked here through Gleeman's site, so there you have it... Of course, the only reason I clicked the link is because I had to check out any blog that was named after an obscure Stephen Malkmus song.

Nice pickup on the title's reference, Ted. No one else has yet known of where it came from. Of course, very few people know who Malkmus is, which is a shame, but anyway...
